"I started looking for a home last year when prices and interest rates were low," Joshua Kerrigan says. "My friends all thought I was crazy to shop for a home when I had a nice rented apartment right on the beach that met my needs. But I just thought the time was right to shop."
Joshua Kerrigan looked at many homes with his realtor, and he was surprised by the selection and range of homes available. In the end, he purchased a fixer-upper in Pompano Beach and has spent this year immersed in various remodeling projects. "Since I was able to get a good deal on my house and my mortgage rate was so low, I had money left over to turn this house into the dream home I've always wanted," Joshua Kerrigan says. Experts hope that more young homebuyers will follow in Joshua Kerrigan's footsteps and buy homes in Florida. People who can step in to these homes and improve them can help neighborhoods recover from the housing slump.
As things stand now, the housing market remains flooded with properties that are vacant and waiting for new buyers, and those vacant homes tend to drive down prices even lower. As an example, a vacant home in the middle of a residential area can develop out-of-control weeds that can become home to mice and rats. Those mice and rats can then invade neighboring homes. In addition to the health hazard, the house looks dark, deserted and dangerous, making the whole neighborhood seem less desirable to new buyers. If more young people with good jobs, people like Joshua Kerrigan, can be convinced to buy homes and fix them up, the housing market in Florida will continue to recover.
"I keep telling my friends that now is the time to get out there and at least look at houses," Joshua Kerrigan says. "There are some great deals out there, and we need to do what we can to help our state get back on its feet. By buying a home, we help ourselves and we help our neighbors. This is really an idea everyone can get behind."
