Family Health Network to Present Webinar on Home Safety for Aging Loved Ones

Webinar to Feature Novelist and Caregiving Expert LaVerne Coan

CHAPEL HILL, NC, June 02, 2011 /HomeFamily PR News/ -- Family Health Network will host a free webinar featuring award-winning novelist and caregiving expert LaVerne Coan on home safety for older family members. The 30-minute webinar will reveal the six areas in and around the house where falls are most likely to occur and how to "fall-proof" your home. The webinar, entitled "Six Steps for Home Safety: Preventing Falls and Maintaining Your Independence," will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at noon EST. To register for the webinar, please visit: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/545870233.

"Ninety percent of people who fall are 65 or older. Two-thirds of those who fall will fall again within six months. As a result, falling down has become a main point of concern and worry for elders and their caregivers," said LaVerne Coan. "However, falls within and around the home can be easily prevented. By taking actions to prevent falls, older family members are able to maintain their independence while caregivers are able to put their minds at ease."

The webinar will provide attendees a closer look at the six risk factors of falling such as osteoporosis, medication and impaired vision. Helpful tips will also be given on how to prevent falls in and outside of the home. Additionally, the webinar will share how seniors can dress for safety. The webinar will also provide information about how elders can be monitored for safety with systems such as personal medical alert devices, motion detectors and Family Health Network's Connected for Life program. At the conclusion of the webinar, attendees will receive a Home Safety Checklist to help "fall-proof" their home as well as the home of an aging loved one.

"Our goal is to help families stay in touch and help older family members who want to live longer, healthier, more independent lives in the comfort of their own home. However, we want to make sure that the home is as safe as possible," said CEO of Family Health Network Harry Bailes. "With the help of caregiving experts such as LaVerne, we can help remove potential dangers in and around the home to help elders maintain their independence as long as possible."
